Bartow, FL – October 17, 2025
At a press conference in Bartow, Florida, Governor Ron DeSantis announced a transformative infrastructure project designed to alleviate chronic traffic congestion along the I-4 corridor, a vital artery connecting Central Florida’s major cities and attractions. The initiative, part of the state’s ambitious Moving Florida Forward program, accelerates critical transportation projects by 10 to 15 years to address pressing mobility needs and support Florida’s growing population and economy.
I-4 Toll Lanes: Easing Congestion
The cornerstone of the project is the addition of one toll lane in each direction (east and west) along the I-4 corridor, utilizing the existing right-of-way to minimize environmental and land acquisition impacts, as well as shorten the project timeline. These toll lanes are designed to incentivize long-distance travelers, such as those traveling between Tampa, Orlando, and beyond, to opt for the premium lanes, thereby reducing congestion in the general-purpose lanes used by local commuters. Originally slated to begin in 2037, the project has been fast-tracked to start construction in fall 2027, demonstrating the state’s proactive approach to addressing one of Florida’s most pressing transportation challenges. This initiative builds on previous I-4 improvements, such as the I-4 Ultimate project, but focuses on sustainable, scalable solutions to accommodate future growth. Notably, the announcement did not address the proposed Brightline high-speed rail expansion to Tampa, which is also expected to utilize the I-4 right-of-way. The absence of details on how these projects will coexist raises questions about coordination and potential impacts on the corridor’s infrastructure planning.
Enhanced Truck Parking at Polk Parkway Interchange
Recognizing the critical role of the logistics and trucking industries in Florida’s economy, the initiative includes the construction of 100 additional truck parking spaces at the I-4 Polk Parkway interchange, located adjacent to Florida Polytechnic University. This expansion addresses the shortage of safe, accessible parking for commercial vehicles, which often leads to unsafe roadside parking or extended search times for drivers. By providing dedicated spaces, the state aims to improve safety, reduce congestion caused by parked trucks, and support the efficient movement of goods across the region. The proximity to Florida Polytechnic University also underscores the synergy between infrastructure development and the state’s focus on fostering innovation and education.
Advanced Air Mobility Facility at SunTrax
A forward-looking component of the initiative is the development of an advanced air mobility (AAM) facility at the SunTrax testing site along the Polk Parkway, near Florida Polytechnic University. SunTrax, a state-of-the-art transportation research facility, will host this new hub dedicated to testing and developing next-generation air mobility technologies, such as electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) vehicles. Governor DeSantis likened these innovations to an “aerial Uber,” envisioning a future where commuters could travel quickly and efficiently from Tampa to major destinations like Disney World or Orlando’s urban core. The AAM facility will serve as a testing ground for these transformative technologies, positioning Florida as a leader in the emerging field of urban air mobility and fostering partnerships with private industry and academic institutions like Florida Poly.
Moving Florida Forward: A Vision for the Future
The Moving Florida Forward initiative reflects Governor DeSantis’ commitment to addressing infrastructure challenges head-on while preparing the state for future growth and technological advancements. By accelerating the I-4 toll lane project by a decade, adding critical truck parking capacity, and investing in advanced air mobility, Florida is taking bold steps to enhance connectivity, support economic development, and improve the quality of life for residents and visitors alike. The I-4 corridor, a vital link for tourism, commerce, and daily commuting, will benefit from these targeted improvements, ensuring it remains a reliable and efficient transportation network for years to come.
